Novelty Student ID Cards in the UK

Student cards are our most popular category, and it's not hard to see why. Real student cards look completely different from one university to the next — there's no standard format — so they get far less scrutiny than a driving licence or passport would.

Types of Student Card

There are a few different styles floating around in the UK:

  • University/college cards — Every uni and college has its own design with the student's name, photo, course, and expiry date.
  • NUS/TOTUM cards — The official discount card, now called TOTUM. Most people still call it an NUS card.
  • ISIC international student cards — Recognised across dozens of countries. Popular with travellers.
  • Generic student cards — Don't reference any specific university. Just say "student" on them.

What's on a Real Student Card?

Real student IDs typically have a name, photo, student number (usually as a barcode), the institution's name and logo, sometimes a course or department, and an expiry date. More and more of them now come with a holographic overlay too.

What People Use Novelty Student Cards For

Film and TV props, gag gifts, social media content, personal collections — that sort of thing. They're novelty items.
